SUMMARY:Integrated controls in NZEBs: Technologies for lighting and HVAC
DESCRIPTION:Archives: EventsModern high performance and net-zero buildings are increasingly smart. And one of the requirements of a smart building is understanding occupant presence. This can increasingly be accomplished through luminaire-level lighting controls (LLLC) with occupancy sensing in every fixture\, creating a dense mesh network of sensing. These occupancy sensing networks are in turn paired with digital communications that allow these sensors to be tapped for many uses\, not just lighting. The sensor signals can also be used to save HVAC energy\, control plug loads\, understand space utilization\, and more. This presentation will describe the basics of LLLC\, how they can be integrated with other systems\, and how designers and operators can make the most of the data from them\, including specific sequence suggestions. We will also discuss use cases in some example buildings. \nAbout the Speaker: \nScott is the Director of Research and Innovation with Slipstream\, leading research efforts focused on commercial building energy systems. His work focuses on applied research of technologies and processes through field monitoring\, analysis\, and extensive energy modeling. He has specialized in the research of HVAC\, lighting\, and plug load controls\, as well as ground source heat pumps. In addition\, he consults with architects and engineers on high-performance building designs and systems. Scott is an active member of ASHRAE at both the local and national levels; including membership in their national Technical Committees. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from UW-Madison\, as well as a graduate certificate in energy analysis and policy. \nThis webinar is part of ‘NZEB Knowledge Series’ – an initiative supported by USAID’s MAITREE program (http://maitree.edsglobal.com) to accelerate the discussions and catalyse actions on Net Zero Energy Buildings in India.

SUMMARY:Designing for outdoor thermal comfort
DESCRIPTION:The conventional way of building accelerates heat island effect of cities and therefore decreases the quality of outdoor spaces\, especially in warm and humid climates. In times of global warming\, outdoor comfort is becoming an important factor for liveability and well-being of human habitats. \nWhile active systems only have a limited range and are not suitable for outdoor areas\, good passive design can make a big difference if an outdoor space feels comfortable or not. It determines how much and how often it is used. In many ways\, outdoor comfort complements high-performance buildings. \nThe webinar explains the principles of outdoor thermal comfort and how to evaluate it. It also illustrates strategies and examples of how to design for comfortable outdoor spaces\, especially in warm and hotter climates. \nAbout the speaker: \nAlexander works at Transsolar’s Munich office. His approach to the different projects is based on his architectural understanding in combination with energy efficiency and sustainable design. He has been involved in the development and implementation of innovative climate and outdoor comfort concepts. Alexander works on daylight and passive house calculations focusing on the holistic process. \nRegister here: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/4203547706548123403 \nThis webinar is part of ‘NZEB Knowledge Series’ – an initiative supported by USAID’s MAITREE program (http://maitree.edsglobal.com) to accelerate the discussions and catalyse actions on Net Zero Energy Buildings in India.

SUMMARY:How to tell your high-performance building story
DESCRIPTION:It is one thing to know how to design an NZEB and another to communicate the idea in a compelling manner to the client and other team members. This requires some skills and understanding of how to use simulations during the early design process. Communicating building design performance through meaningful and effective graphics is integral to achieving an NZEB. In many ways\, Project Stasio aims to do this. In this webinar\, the speakers will introduce the basic principles of using graphics to communicate a high-performance story\,  as well as a methodology for architects and modelers to ask questions about simulations effectively. \nProject Stasio is an online website populated with crowd-sourced simulation graphics which helps improve the way modelers graphically communicate with designers. This webinar brings Project Stasio team to talk about the following in a panel discussion while sharing their professional experience:\n1) What and why the communication gap?\n2) How graphics can cover the gap?\n3) How to get the point across in practice? \nAbout the speakers:\nMichael Sawford is a building simulation specialist with over 10 years of experience and is the Vice President at EDSL USA\, Inc. \nAlejandra Menchaca is a Senior Associate at Thornton Tomasetti\, where she co-leads the Sustainability Practice for the Boston office. \nAmarpreet Sethi is a Principal at TK1SC\, an engineering firm and leads the Energy and Sustainability team. \nThis webinar is part of ‘NZEB Knowledge Series’ – an initiative supported by USAID’s MAITREE program (http://maitree.edsglobal.com) to accelerate the discussions and catalyse actions on Net Zero Energy Buildings in India.

SUMMARY:High performance by design | Avasara Academy
DESCRIPTION:This 4.3 acre campus located in Lavale (near Pune\, India) is a collection of simple structures arranged around an informal series of walkways\, courtyards\, gardens and terraces. This residence school campus is an example of modern architecture meets vernacular design by Casedesign using passive design principles achieving net-zero energy. \nA climate-responsive massing\, strategic program placement\, and locally sourced wooden shades in combination with overhangs set the stage for passive climate strategy. Earth ducts with solar chimney provide natural ventilation\, cooling and year-round comfort eliminating the use of mechanical cooling systems as worked out by Transsolar KlimaEngineering. This passive design strategy has reduced the annual energy cost by 80%. A handful of solar water heaters provides hot water for showers and PV panels on the building roof supplies electricity for ceiling fans and electric lighting in the building\, making it also a Net-zero Energy Building. \nLearn more about the high performance design process and detail of this building from the architect – Samuel Barclay (Founder\, Casedesign) in the live webinar. \nRegister now: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/5972837836349305613 \nAbout the speaker:\nSamuel Barclay practised in Los Angeles with Studio Works Architects before moving to India in 2006 to work with Studio Mumbai and founded Case Design in 2013. In addition to his experience in the design and construction of architectural projects\, he has worked on furniture\, interiors\, and exhibitions and founded the brand Casegoods in 2015.
