SUMMARY:Seminar on Housing Energy Efficiency and ECBC in India
DESCRIPTION:The rapid income growth and vast urbanization in India today have led the buildings sector to unprecedented development. Given that buildings account for one third of India’s total final energy consumption\, there is great potential to save energy and enhance energy security by constructing more energy-efficient buildings. Projections show residential energy consumption may rise by 8 times by 2050\, but appropriate policies and efforts could help reduce the increase by up to 63 percent. Commercial buildings are also expected to grow fast\, and two thirds of India’s commercial building stock in 2030 is yet to be built. Launched by the Ministry of Power in 2007 with an initial focus on the commercial sector\, the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) could help reduce energy use in commercial buildings by 25 to 40 percent compared with typical Indian buildings without code implementation. \n  \nStates and cities are taking actions to improve building energy efficiency\, including building more efficient housing and adopting ECBC. What strategies and policies are they taking and how do these strategies work out? What are the best options for successful implementation of these strategies? What kinds of technologies are available for deeper energy savings? How do housing energy efficiency programs and ECBC synergize with other energy efficiency policies for even broader savings? You will be able to find out all the answers and more in the forthcoming seminar featuring thorough and interactive discussions on housing energy efficiency and ECBC. \n  \nIndian Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (MHUPA) and Indian Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO) will co-host a seminar with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)*\, International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC)\, Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM)\, Clean Energy Solutions Center (CESC)**\, and Building Efficiency Accelerator partnership (BEA)*** to demonstrate benefits of housing energy efficiency programs and ECBC with real-world examples\, share domestic and international experience in implementing building energy efficiency policies and programs\, discuss options for enforcement\, and link housing energy efficiency programs and ECBC with best available technologies and existing energy efficiency policies. \nThis event will provide a forum for policy makers\, industry\, and researchers to explore and discuss strategies to realize the huge energy savings potentials from housing and commercial buildings in India. The two-day seminar will feature discussions on housing energy efficiency\, ECBC\, strategies for policy implementation\, and technology options. Invited speakers and panelists from national\, state\, and local government agencies\, building industry and international research institutes will collaborate in highly interactive presentations\, panel discussions\, networking and dialogue.
