SUMMARY:Energy Efficient Buildings for a Sustainable Future: Transatlantic Exchange
DESCRIPTION:The impending post-COVID era presents a unique opportunity to build less carbon-dependent economies in a way that addresses social\, economic\, health\, and environmental challenges. \nLooking toward the future\, policy makers must implement the plans\, incentives\, tools\, and technologies needed to truly “build back better” and improve day-to-day life for all people. In doing so\, the built environment must not be overlooked. Buildings are a critical piece of the transition to a lower-carbon future. They are responsible for about 40% of global energy consumption and about one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions. \nThis webinar will bring together high-level decision makers and technical experts from the European Union and the United States to discuss leading policies and programs related to building decarbonization and energy efficiency in the built environment that are transforming the ways we build.

SUMMARY:GETTING TO ZERO: CARBON NEUTRAL CODES
DESCRIPTION:For decades\, U.S. building energy codes have centered on kilowatt-hour savings in buildings. But urgency on climate change is pressing us to rapidly address and mitigate carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions from the built environment\, which is responsible for 39% of operational and embodied carbon. Join us for a one-hour webinar on the opportunities for states and cities to leverage their energy codes in order to maximize carbon reductions and minimize costs including a broad overview of best practice strategies and approach in action. NBI staff will introduce new “decarbonization code language” that it is compatible with the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and can be adopted as an overlay option. The code language and supporting guidance\, which will help adopting agencies move to carbon neutral requirements in newly constructed homes and commercial buildings\, prioritizes efficient electric equipment and is designed so that it can be implemented to meet jurisdictions where they are.

SUMMARY:Three day workshop @MIT: Model Cities Anywhere – Pathways towards a Net Zero Urban Building Stock
DESCRIPTION:The Sustainable Design Lab at MIT has developed an new web app called UBEM.io to streamline the creation and analysis of urban building energy models (UBEMs). The resulting urban models can be directly used within MIT’s Urban Modeling Interface (UMI) to calculate operational building energy use along with savings from various retrofitting upgrades for hundreds or thousands of new or existing buildings. During this free\, three day workshop we are looking for teams who want to develop a greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction plan for their jurisdiction. \nWhen & Where? \nThe workshop will be taught remotely. Formal instructions will last from 10am-3pm EST every day from January 19th to 21st 2021. During the workshop\, external groups of two will be teamed up with two MIT students to set up a prototype UBEM of parts of their city. The expectation is that external groups will continue working with the city following the workshop and ultimately share their findings with the instructors. \nEligibility Requirements \no    Participants must demonstrate that they have existing\, strong relationships with a municipal government agency responsible for implementing a GHG emission reduction plan. To demonstrate actual interest\, a city representative is expected to participate during the first hour of the workshop for an overview (Jan 19 10am ET) as well as during the final presentation of preliminary results on Jan 21 at 1pm ET. \no    At least one member of the team should have experience using building energy modeling software and be committed to continue working with the city on the UBEM past the three day workshop. \no    Data requirements: A recent GIS shapefile and tax assessor data or other databases describing building heights (or stories) and program must be available to the team before the workshop. \no    Software requirements: To initially generate our UBEMs\, we will be using MIT’s new UBEM.io web app. For the actual energy simulations we will be using the Urban modeling Interface\, a plug-in for Rhinoceros 3D (Rhino). Participants will need access to a newish Windows computer with Rhino on it. \nRegistration \nTo register your interest in the workshop\, please fill out this form.

SUMMARY:NZEB Knowledge Series | Net Zero & Low Carbon by Design - Bayalpata Hospital in Nepal
DESCRIPTION:Register now \nBayalpata Hospital in Achham\, Nepal is a culturally-appropriate design that leverages local climate and on-site materials to minimize carbon in the construction process and building operation. Built from low-tech construction methods–primarily reinforced rammed earth–the complex minimized the cost-prohibitive transportation of building materials in this remote\, mountainous region. The grid-hybrid solar hospital generates surplus energy due to the combination of passive design strategies–including natural light and ventilation–and a 100-kilowatt photovoltaic array integrated into the buildings’ south-facing roofs\, resulting in an impeccable net zero design. This webinar will showcase the process and techniques that went into the making of this exemplary project. \nAbout the speaker:\nTyler Survant\nTyler is an architect and Project Director at Sharon Davis Design\, and was the project manager for the Bayalpata Hospital\, a rammed earth medical campus in the Himalayas for Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population\, completed in 2019. SUMMARY:The 12th GRIHA Summit - Rejuvenating Resilient Habitats
DESCRIPTION:Annual conference on green buildings by The Energy and Resources Institute. \nThe 12th GRIHA Summit scheduled from December 15-16\, 2020 has been themed around “Rejuvenating Resilient Habitats” and shall serve as a platform to deliberate on innovative technologies and solutions which shall help in creating robust mechanisms for developing sustainable and resilient solutions for the benefit of the entire community. \nThe world has been witnessing a number of natural calamities be it floods\, droughts\, and cyclones. All these calamities question the way we design our habitats which currently demonstrate rampant usage of resources and hold a complete disregard of nature unlike the buildings that used to be designed in the past. Thus\, nature has been giving us signals time and again to change the ways of our operation so as to maintain harmony with the environment or else we would be witnessing some irreversible consequences that would not only affect us but our future generations as well. \nTherefore\, it is high time for us to change our designing and construction practices to be resilient. Resilience in terms of climate\, health related issues\, natural calamities\, biodiversity\, etc. Resilient Habitat is therefore an approach in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation which targets the most vulnerable communities. By restoring the traditional practices of building and cities construction\, we wish to gear up the building construction sector for a vibrant and much fresher approach to the built environment\, living symbiotically with all the components of the natural environment.

SUMMARY:NZEB Knowledge Series | Personal Thermal Comfort Systems: Introduction and Overview
DESCRIPTION:Register now \nAir-conditioned buildings are conventionally designed and operated to maintain homogeneous thermal conditions withing thermal zones. Maintaining the occupied and unoccupied thermal zones at the same thermal conditions lead to higher energy consumption. More importantly\, homogeneous thermal conditions do not address the need for individual thermal comfort preferences of the building occupants. A personal comfort system (PCS) allows the occupants to create desired localized thermal conditions around workstations in the office environment. \nIn this webinar\, Prof Rawal will deliberate on the approaches adopted for the PCS to deliver the desired conditions. It also will deal with investigative methods adopted to understand the impact of the PCS on achieving thermal comfort\, energy\, and well being of the building occupant. The webinar will include metrics and conditions prescribed by the literature to design and operate PCS in the buildings. \nAbout the speaker:\nRajan Rawal\nExecutive Director\, Centre for Advanced Research in Building Science and Energy\, CEPT University\, Ahmedabad\nProf. Rawal is the Executive Director of Centre for Advanced Research in Building Science and Energy (CARBSE). He is an architect and his work emphasizes on ‘energy performance of buildings and cities’ and ‘architectural science education’. He is involved in research and development activities at CEPT University and coordinates the activities of CARBSE. He is founder member secretary of India Chapter of International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA) and also serves at IBPSA world committee. He has number of research papers\, technical reports and three books to his credits.
