Nidhi Gupta delivered a keynote on 'Moving towards and beyond Zero' at the session on 'Sustainability in Built Environments' at the Second International Symposium on 'Sustainable Development Research in the Asia-Pacific'. The conference was organized by MITS, Gwalior, India and RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia in partnership with the United Nation's Environment One Planet’s Sustainable Buildings and Construction (SBC) Program on 19th – 21st December, 2019.

Avasara Academy is a residential school campus located in Lavale (near Pune), Maharashtra that exemplifies how contemporary architecture can incorporate climate-responsive design principles and vernacular approach to achieve net-zero energy. The project reduced its annual energy cost by 80% using a completely passive design. In the daytime, pre-cooled air from the earth ducts is supplied to the spaces and flushed out through solar chimneys. Rooftop solar PV and solar hot water systems meet the residual energy demand. Haryana, Kerala and Telangana are 'Achievers' under State EE Index 2019

The AEEE State Energy Efficiency Index 2019 evaluates energy efficiency initiatives across all states using 97 indicators covering buildings, industries, DISCOMs and more. Haryana, Kerala, Telangana and Karnataka led the 'Buildings' rankings with progressive strategies like incentives for green buildings, subsidized energy audits and streamlining ECBC compliance. The report findings underscore the urgent need for all states to strengthen their institutional capacity and benchmark as well as record the energy intensity across buildings.

Supercooling radiative materials may eliminate need for cooling energy

Manufacturers like SkyCool Systems and InventWood are developing materials that reflect sunlight while radiating heat into deep space, and as a result, stay cool even in the day. These materials, which include paints, plastics and wood, are being researched for creating zero-energy cooling systems. Read more
