The "Retrofit of Air-conditioning to improve Indoor Air Quality for Safety and Efficiency" program
Poor air quality has been a concern in India for quite some time and has become even more important since the COVID-19 pandemic. As people return to their offices and public spaces, maintaining good indoor air quality is essential for occupant comfort, well-being, productivity and the overall public health. Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), in partnership with U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) MAITREE program, has initiated “Retrofit of Air-conditioning to improve Indoor air quality for Safety and Efficiency” (RAISE) for ensuring healthy and energy efficient buildings . Watch the webinar 'Can affordable housing be energy efficient and green?': LDA's success story'
Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) in partnership with USAID’s Market Integration and Transformation of Energy Efficiency (MAITREE) program has embarked on an ambitious plan to ensure that all new building establishments under its purview are green and energy efficient. The webinar focuses on LDA's vision and strategies as a model for other cities to implement low-cost, sustainably designed housing. View the recorded session here.
Live Webinar on 16th July- 'Integrated controls for NZEBs: Technologies for Lighting and HVAC'
Occupancy sensing in luminaire-level lighting controls (LLLC) can be tapped to inform savings on HVAC energy, control plug loads, understand space utilization and more. This webinar will cover the basics of LLLC, how they can be integrated with other systems, and how designers and operators can make the most of the data from them.

Case Study

San Francisco City College Multi-Use Building, USA
Amidst COVID-19, well-ventilated buildings are being recognized for their ability to ensure health and wellness. One such building is the San Francisco City College Multi-use Building. The 102,000 sft. building is one of the largest in the US to rely on natural ventilation for fresh air and cooling requirements.

The central atrium in the building, angled windwards, creates a mild vacuum on the leeward side and helps draw air out of the building. Further, louvered openings can be modulated to control ventilation. The building design includes sensors to monitor temperature, air flow and carbon dioxide levels on a room-by-room basis. The natural ventilation is so effective that the building doesn't use an air handling unit. Additionally, operable windows give occupants an opportunity to control their space conditions.

The building also incorporates other energy conservation strategies like shading, daylighting and green roof to achieve a low Energy Performance Index (EPI) of around 89 KWh/sqm/year. With added renewables, it has the potential to become a net-zero energy facility. Read more
