Opinion: The Passive House approach for warm climates

The Passive House concept is based on the goal of reducing heat losses to an absolute minimum, thus rendering large cooling and heating systems unnecessary. Stringent performance requirements of the Standard ensure thermal comfort with least energy use possible. Naman Sukhija enumerates how the ‘passive-first’ approach is applicable to all climate zones with examples of PassiveHouse certified projects from the warm regions. He emphasizes that pushing the envelope is key for achieving net-zero goals.

SIERRA’S eFACiLiTY® Green Office Building

Coimbatore, India

SIERRA’s eFACiLiTY® building is a software development centre in Coimbatore, India. This 25,000 sft innovative smart building leverages it’s cutting-edge building management systems (BMS), controls, and automation to reduce its carbon footprint. Climate responsive principles integrated into the design lays the foundation to reduce the energy footprint of the building. Highly energy efficient air conditioning systems with controls further optimize energy use during operations. The building has 80 kW rooftop solar PV and 4.3 kW Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) which meets 80% of the energy demand and about 33% of the energy use further reducing the EPI to 18.8 KWh/m2/year.

100% automation and integration with state of the art BMS takes the building to the next level of efficiency. Notable features include eFACiLiTY®  Smart Facility App used for individual comfort control, demand-controlled Diesel Generator, automatic sprinkler cooling system for solar panels and automated need-based operation of water pumping system to control water wastage. The project is also a zero-discharge site by ensuring 100% rainwater harvesting and 100% wastewater treatment to tertiary standards. Read the detailed case study.
