Grid-Interactive Net Zero Energy Buildings

Grid-Interactive Net Zero Energy Buildings (G-NZEB) can be described as ‘highly energy-efficient, grid-connected buildings that meet their energy needs through renewable means, while maintaining a two-way communication with the grid’. Grid-Interactive Net Zero Energy Buildings are:

  1. Highly energy-efficient, optimizing building design and featuring thermally appropriate walls & windows, high-performance appliances, and efficient systems to reduce both net energy consumption and peak demand.
  2. Interactive and connected, maintaining two-way communication with the grid.
  3. Smart, using data analytics to optimally manage loads, occupant preferences, and grid requirements.
  4. Flexible, dynamically adjusting and optimizing their energy loads.
The buildings, utilities, and the grid form symbiotic entities of the G-NZEB web. We will soon be bringing to you the ZerO-In platform which will explain concepts, definitions, terminologies, dialogues, and resources on grid-interactive high performing buildings, especially in the context of their development in India and South Asia. Stay tuned for more details!

This section on the NZEB website is populated with case studies of energy-efficient and net-zero energy buildings with a focus on India aiming to provide insights on the feasibility of the concept. So far, this year, we have added six new case studies in India and three in South Asia which are low-energy buildings. Green Conversations: Organic India Production Facility | Sep 16, 2021
The 12 million square feet Integrated Production Facility for Organic India in Lucknow is a campus designed to support the production, processing, and administrative functions of the holistic wellness brand. This building imbibes local influences to create a sustainable built environment. A gamut of passive design techniques - including terracotta filler slabs in the large-span spaces, and recessed openings to cut out the solar glare, courtyards and lightwells, among other interventions have accorded the project a LEED Platinum rating. This live webinar will bring together Mr. Balram Singh (CEO, Organic India), Mr. Siddhartha Talwar (Principal, Studio Lotus), Mr. Gurneet Singh (Director, EDS) showcasing the project features, sharing their experience about bringing this project to life and their perspectives on sustainability.

Webinar recording available: Climate-Smart Cities
2 degrees of warming would unravel differently across various cities. We need to identify what kind of interventions are required to respond to its effects. On August 20, in our 45th webinar, Dr. Mahesh Rajasekar explained how we can mainstream climate actions as part of ongoing developmental activities and make the difference in achieving net zero emissions by 2050. He discussed the key findings from the Climate-Smart Cities Assessment Framework (CSCAF) 2.0. The primary objective of the assessment was not to rank cities but to provide a pathway for the cities. Dr. Rajasekar explained through this extensive study we can understand where cities stand today and what are the next steps to ensure that the interventions and development activities are informed considering multiple stakeholders.

Reducing energy use by design

Switching from fossil fuel to clean energy

Here are the results:
We got 135 responses out of which 62% of the votes were for reducing energy use by design and 38% for switching to fossil fuels. Many of you shared your thoughts with us, some of them are listed below.
  • “Reducing energy use by design utilizes first principles”
  • “Switching from fossil fuels to clean energy will have an immediate and exponentially higher chance of reducing pollution and slowing down climate change. Reducing energy use by design will have a long-term effect on climate change, as of current we need both immediate and long-term strategies but immediate solutions will benefit us soon.”
  • “Even if we reduce energy by design we will still be dependent on conventional sources which are non-renewable. Hence clean and renewable energy sources are the way ahead.
​While both steps are important, we also think that energy conservation is the first step to energy efficiency. Passive design strategies help reduce energy use by about 50% as evident in high-performance building design such as Shenzhen Institute of Building Research Headquarters Building, Unnati building in India and the SDE4 building at National University in Singapore to name a few.

Global warming stays below 2℃ during this century only under scenarios where CO2 emissions reach net-zero around or after 2050."

Case Study

Unnati Office, India

 

The Unnati Office Building is the regional headquarter (North) for Gainwell Commosales Pvt. Ltd., part of a larger 5 acre campus. Passive design strategies have been integrated with the building design which reduces the total diversified air conditioning load to about 90 tons for 33,500 sqft. Some of the design features include truss reinforced insulated concrete panels, roof insulation, 30% window to wall ratio, adequate shading, high performance glazing, radiant cooling with water cooled AHUs, natural ventilation, lighting power density of 0.36 W/sqft and many more. The well planned building enables 90% of the office spaces, including the core and service areas to receive uniformly distributed daylight. The building performs 59% better than a conventional office building in the region, and 40% of the building energy consumption is met through on site renewable energy generation making this an exemplary high-performance building. Further, it is the first building in India to be certified Platinum under LEED v4 BD+C:NC rating in 2018. Read the detailed case study.

Apply for NEERMAN Awards 2021
Energy Code implementation is important to set the path towards achieving high-performing net zero energy buildings for the industry. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has announced the National Energy Efficiency Roadmap for Movement towards Affordable & Natural Habitat (NEERMAN) Awards to showcase & encourage exemplary commercial buildings complying with ECBC 2017 and residential buildings complying with Eco-Niwas Samhita 2018 (ENS). Such initiatives can be a catalyst in Code implementation. Deadline for registration has been extended until 30th September. Apply now
About USAID MAITREE program
USAID-led Market Integration and Transformation for Energy Efficiency program (MAITREE) is a four-year bilateral program with the Ministry of Power. MAITREE supports efforts for moving towards a super-efficient and Net Zero Energy target for new buildings. EDS is the implementing partner of this program.
