March 2020

Bulletin

The COVID-19 pandemic is having an unprecedented impact across the world. Governments, organizations, and businesses are being driven to embrace newer ways of collaboration and innovation. Amidst these times, many are realizing that high-performance resilient buildings would play a huge role in creating a healthy and safe environment.
Can the world sustain this momentum to mitigate climate change?

We at MAITREE are committed to continue and expand knowledge sharing platforms and fuel the dialogue for NZEBs. We're lining up many more insightful webinars, training programs, and online interactive sessions this month! In the meantime, we wish you good health and safety.
Now launching- Climate Responsive Design Online Program 2020
Empower yourself with skills and knowledge to identify, design and recommend strategies for climate responsive design with this 3-week online certificate course. You will learn software tools to identify design strategies, analytical techniques to validate decisions and communications skills to tell the story effectively. This training program will be conducted online in a unique blended learning format; which means it blends live webinar sessions with online on-demand courses. You can attend the webinar from any location and take the online course content at your time and pace.

Upcoming webinar: EDGE Net Zero Carbon Certification
Tune in on 24th April @ 4 PM IST to learn about EDGE's guidelines for achieving Net Zero Carbon. The EDGE green building certification system has introduced a Zero Carbon (ZC) recognition for high-achieving projects. ZC is an operational certification that is available for projects that achieve carbon neutrality with 40% or more energy savings on-site, achieving 100% through renewables or topping off with carbon offsets.

Unisphere- one of the world's largest NZEB
The Unisphere is one of the world’s largest net-zero commercial buildings, located in Silver Spring, Maryland, Washington DC. The 135,000 sft. commercial building surmounts the challenges of achieving NZE starting with a mindset shift towards deciding to build only that much which can be supported by on-site renewable energy. This shift drove every single decision thereafter to achieve a cutting edge NZEB. For example, its openable windows automatically change tints depending on weather conditions. Moreover, air circulates through a quarter mile-long concrete labyrinth 12 feet underneath the building, providing passive heating and cooling—the labyrinth tends to be cooler than the outdoor air in the summer and warmer in the winter. The spaces are optimized for natural daylight, with daylight controls integrated into the artificial lighting systems. The building meets its energy requirements through 3000 rooftop solar panels. Read more

Guidelines for prevention of COVID-19 spread through building services
REHVA, a European HVAC association, has outlined recommendations for preventing indoor spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus through HVAC and plumbing systems. These include window-driven natural ventilation (except in toilets) and turning off central re-circulation. Read more
BEE schemes reduced national electricity consumption by 7% till date
Energy-efficiency schemes led by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) led to significant electricity and cost savings, as reported by a Govt. of India parliamentary committee. Over the years since BEE was established in 2002, 109.54 billion units of electricity were saved corresponding to 18.82 million tonnes of oil equivalent and 125.18 CO2 emissions. Read more
IRENA:75% of new electricity capacity in 2019 came from renewables :
IRENA data shows that solar, wind and renewables provided for more than one-third of the world's power, with 55% of the new power coming from solar- most of which is installed in China, India and other parts of Asia. Read more
