Monthly updates about our initiatives, global highlights and everything NZEB!

August 2020

The year 2020 continues to be extraordinary in more ways than one. Human life has been impacted globally by COVID-19, economic crisis and a series of natural disasters. On one hand, we are experiencing; wildfires in California, extremely high temperatures in parts of the US, typhoons in Japan, flooding in parts of South Asia to name a few. Simultaneously, we are witnessing  improved air quality, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, less noise and waste. An ecosystem that is safe and healthy for people, good for the environment and equitable for society at large; is possible. Imbibing a sustainable lifestyle and our choices at home, work and for travel will shape a “better” new-normal. Through NZEB initiatives, we aim to empower you to shape the built environment in this direction.

Attend the Industry Roundtable on "Building Green : Approach & Insights for Market Transformation" on 17th September, 5:30 pm IST

This roundtable brings together industry leaders to share their perspectives on making energy efficiency and green building practices mainstream. They will share their insights on the challenges they have faced and the approach they have adopted to be champions of green while being at the forefront of their domains. Join us as they share their experiences and strategies for addressing market barriers for building green.

USAID MAITREE program in partnership with USGBC conducted a nationwide survey of owners, developers, manufacturers, and building professionals to glean their understanding of green building practices. The survey assessed the perception of the construction sector about the barriers to building green. The survey helped in identifying potential approaches to overcoming these barriers.  “Building Green: Approach & Insights for Market Transformation”, a report summarizing the survey findings and way forward, will be released during the event.

Take the ‘NZEB Quiz on Lighting’
Every month we bring a topical quiz to refresh and expand your knowledge. This month, we focus on lighting. The largest energy end-use in commercial buildings after airconditioning is lighting. As a technology, lighting has seen rapid development. It is possible to achieve a lighting power density (LPD) of 0.7 W/sft (70 W/sqm) without additional cost in a business-as-usual building while a high performance NZEB could have a LPD as low as 0.4 W/sft (40 W/sqm). Take this fun technical quiz to assess your knowledge about lighting technology and fundamentals.

Case Study

Entegrity Headquarters, USA

The Headquarters of Entegrity, a building performance optimization consulting company is the first LEED Zero-certified project in the United States, and the second in the world. The renovation of the 13,342 sft Historic Darragh Building, originally built in 1959 was executed with sustainability and historic preservation in mind. Energy efficiency strategies employed in this building include use of all-LED lighting, dynamic self-tinting glass, operable windows and doors for natural ventilation in the warmer months, and occupancy sensors.

Other sustainability features of the building include the use of locally sourced materials as much as possible, preserving access to daylight and views, controllability of lighting comfort through the use of dynamic glass and self-tinting windows, highly efficient plumbing fixtures, and native landscaping. Solar rooftop PV system of 48kW meets the energy requirement of the building making it a net-zero energy facility. The building has also been awarded ILFI's Zero Energy certification.

World Green Building Council celebrates milestone in Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment

World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) has announced that the total number of signatories to the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment has reached 100, marking a doubling of participation in the programme in just over one year. By 2030, these commitments will affect approximately 3.4 million tonnes of CO2 (tCO2e). Read more
Splitting of water could potentially be a renewable source of energy
Scientists are exploring the feasibility of splitting water molecules to obtain hydrogen (H2)  and breathable oxygen (O2). The chemical experiment was performed with fresh water, but the team says that even salt water may be used to produce hydrogen fuel. Read more
Disney’s net-zero flagship McDonald’s
The McDonald’s Disney Flagship fast food eatery in Florida is the only quick-service restaurant to achieve Net Zero Energy. The flagship’s energy savings is anticipated to be 35% more compared to its predecessor. Passive strategies provide cooling 65% of the time which significantly reduces the need for air conditioning systems. Solar PV is spread on the rooftop, canopy, parking and integrated in the facade to meet the energy requirements. Read more
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport gets energy efficiency awards
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) awarded Hyderabad airport with the 'Excellent Energy Efficient Unit' and 'National Energy Leader' accolades for 4th and 2nd year in a row, respectively. Over the last three years the airport has achieved energy savings of 4.55 MU by adopting sustainable and energy efficient measures. Read more
