Industry Roundtable on "Building Green: Approach & Insights for Market Transformation" held on September 17, 2020

USAID MAITREE program in partnership with USGBC had conducted a nationwide study to glean understanding of green building practices amongst the different building stakeholders. The study assessed the perception of the construction sector on the barriers to building green. The study also identified potential approaches to overcoming these barriers. An online industry roundtable was held on September, 17th to share findings of the study and engage with industry experts for their perspectives on best practices and efforts towards market transformation. Building Green: Approach & Insights for Market Transformation”, a report summarizing the research findings and way forward, was released during the event. This event also brought together industry leaders, from the United States and India such as UL, Hines, HKS and Carrier to share their perspectives on making energy efficiency and green building practices mainstream. If you missed the event, you can read a summary here or watch the recording here.

Presentation at Solar Decathlon technical series on September 19, 2020
Solar Decathlon India is a competition among postgraduate and graduate students to combat climate change in the buildings sector by designing net-zero-energy, net-zero-water, net-zero-waste and climate-resilient buildings. The NZEB platform serves as a knowledge resource for the participants to aid their design process. The 10-part technical training series held for the participating teams, including their faculty advisors was kicked-off with a webinar by Tanmay Tathagat, Director of Environmental Design Solutions. The webinar established a context for the need for energy efficiency, why buildings matter, the value of analysis, the process and simulations for optimized design, parametric analysis, sensitivity analysis, optimization of energy conservation measures, and an overview of the Energy Conservation Building Code.

Opinion : A paradigm for thermal comfort in tropics
The way we define comfort plays a significant role in design. Wolfgang Kessling, Principal of Transsolar KlimaEngineering raises a strong argument for climate responsive architecture by revisiting the way thermal comfort is defined and delivered in design. He emphasizes a holistic view on all parameters affecting human comfort and not just focusing on temperature set-points as a paradigm for design in reference to the net zero SDE-4 building at National University, Singapore.

Showcase your project on the NZEB portal
The NZEB portal is a one-stop information site for net zero energy buildings. We would like to feature high performing and net zero energy ready buildings that demonstrate feasibility of the concept on this portal. Diverse case studies across geographies is key to establish that achieving Net Zero Energy is not just a pipe dream. If you are interested in showcasing a high-performance/ Net Zero Energy project you have worked on, or know of such a project, please share details through the form below.

Case Study

Hanergy’s Renewable Energy Center, China

Hanergy’s Renewable Energy Center, located in Beijing’s Olympic Park, an all-solar green building, covers 7119 square meters and features Hanergy’s HanWall, flexible thin film solar modules on the top and sides of the building and HanBrick on the walkway. This has helped it achieve the first "LEED Zero Carbon" certified building credential by USGBC. During the certification process, the project was adjudged to uphold the three-level energy efficiency concept of self-sufficiency, surplus storage, and grid independence, while exhibiting green environmental protection design, technological innovation, and sustainable development.
