Awareness program on Sustainable Public Procurement (SPP) for Indian railways

European Commission’s SWITCH-Asia Program organized an Awareness Program for Sustainable Public Procurement (SPP) for Indian Railways from 27th to 29th October, 2020. Mr. Tanmay Tathagat presented the SPP framework, criteria and room air conditioner specifications developed for the Department of Expenditure at the Ministry of Finance. This work was carried out under the USAID MAITREE program and in partnership with UNEP. He also presented the Net Zero Vision and Roadmap for the Indian Railways, developed under the USAID program.

Opinion: What is net zero building?
Ar.Sanjay Prakash argues that the idea of building performance as ‘net-zero’, even ‘net-positive’ can be erroneous and even dangerous. He says “Erroneous because, like all economic flows of resources, there is a revenue-type component to buildings and a capital-type component. One often trades one for the other and a fully ‘net-zero’ scheme would not be able to do so…..” Read the entire blog as he lays down the principles for a truly ‘net-zero’ or ‘net-positive’ from a planetary point-of-view

Showcase your project on the NZEB portal
The NZEB portal is a one-stop information site for net zero energy buildings. We would like to feature high performing and net zero energy ready buildings that demonstrate feasibility of the concept on this portal. If you are interested in showcasing a high-performance/ Net Zero Energy project you have worked on, or know of such a project, please share details through the form below.

Upcoming Webinars

NZEB Knowledge Series - Personal Thermal Comfort (PCS) systems: Introduction and Overview | November 27, 2020
Air-conditioned buildings are conventionally designed and operated to maintain homogeneous thermal conditions within thermal zones which do not address the need for individual thermal comfort preferences of the building occupants. A personal comfort system (PCS) allows the occupants to create desired localized thermal conditions around workstations in the office environment. In this webinar, Prof Rajan Rawal from Centre for Advanced Research in Building Science and Energy, CEPT University, Ahmedabad will deliberate on the approaches adopted for PCS to deliver the desired conditions. It also will deal with investigative methods adopted to understand the impact of the PCS on achieving thermal comfort, energy, and well being of the building occupant.

NZEB Knowledge Series - Net zero and low carbon by design: Bayalpata hospital in Nepal | December 15, 2020
Bayalpata Hospital in Achham, Nepal is a culturally-appropriate design that leverages local climate and on-site materials to minimize carbon in the construction process and building operation. Built from low-tech construction methods, primarily reinforced rammed earth, the complex minimized the cost-prohibitive transportation of building materials in this remote, mountainous region. The grid-hybrid solar hospital generates surplus energy due to the combination of passive design strategies, including natural light and ventilation and a 100-kilowatt photovoltaic array integrated into the buildings' south-facing roofs, resulting in an impeccable net zero design. In this webinar, Tyler Survant - Project Director at Sharon Davis Design will share the process and techniques that went into the making of this exemplary project.

Pringapus 6&7 at Semarang, Indonesia

Pringapus 6&7 (PA6&7) is a readymade garment manufacturing facility located in the Central Java province of Indonesia. This 17,425 sqm building is spread over two floors with identical functional arrangement for garment manufacturing. Climate responsive design strategies like appropriate orientation, courtyards, shading and fenestrations ensure adequate natural ventilation and daylight in the space. An efficient combination of ambient and task lighting has helped the project sharply reduce light power density leading to significant energy savings. With an EPI of 103 kWh/sqm-yr, this energy efficient factory building is expected to perform 49% better than a conventional building in the region. The project has installed a 200KWp solar system which offsets 15% of its total energy cost. Read detailed case study.

Solar is now ‘cheapest electricity in history’, confirms IEA
As per the World Energy Outlook 2020 report, “For projects with low-cost financing that tap high-quality resources, solar PV is now the cheapest source of electricity in history.” The lower costs and more rapid growth for solar seen in this year’s outlook means there will be record-breaking additions of new solar capacity in every year from 2020, says the IEA. Read more

China announces action plan to aim for net zero emissions by 2060.

For a country which relies on coal to generate its 60% of electricity the commitment calls for significant reforms in policies and reduction in the consumption of fossil fuels. Electric mobility accounts for 2% of the transportation industry and renewable resources account for 10% of the total power generation. Energy efficiency is going to play a pivotal role in the transformation of China. Read more
