ZerO-In | Grid Interactive Net Zero Energy Buildings (G-NZEB)
Countries across the globe are working on two fronts:
-
Embracing net-zero or near-zero goals as they seek to diminish the energy footprint and carbon emissions of their building stock.
-
Zero strategies typically emphasize taking a systems approach to reduce the overall impact of the resource use cycle i.e. water, energy, material, transport, and waste footprint. However, since intensive energy use is seen as a primary driver for climate change today; net-zero “energy” or “carbon” targets are being prioritized.
-
Transitioning to a decarbonized, decentralized, and digitized grid of the future.
So far, building energy demand and grid services have been distinct discussions, with the only overlapping interface being that of renewable energy. Countries globally are now realizing that buildings are an important last mile connection to the grid of the future, and demand flexibility offered by buildings and equipment is an opportunity untapped. Panel discussion on NDTV | Can real estate get to net-zero?
Countries and organizations around the world are gearing up their COP 26 strategy, setting net-zero goals and commitment to limit global warming under 1.5 degree C. Tanmay Tathagat, Director - Environmental Design Solutions Pvt Ltd shared his perspective on The Property Show on NDTV 24x7 on how the real estate sector can get to net-zero on. He talked about how cooling demand is a growing challenge in existing buildings but there are proven solutions for the same. Going forward, the real estate sector would need to address the understanding and quantification of carbon intensity in buildings.

Energy efficient affordable housing by Lucknow Development Authority
MAITREE has supported Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) towards development of a Vision and Roadmap for Green and Energy Efficient Housing. Over 4500 homes that are affordable, green, energy efficient and climate resilient have already been constructed at Sharda Nagar and Basant Kunj in Lucknow by LDA. This pioneering effort towards scaling green and affordable housing was showcased at the 'Azadi@75: New Urban India - Transforming Urban Landscape' Conference-cum-Expo on October 5, inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. A short movie about the project has been featured on the NZEBIndia Youtube channel.

Take the NZEB Quiz for a refresher on daylight fundamentals
The NZEB Quiz started last month with passive design fundamentals. This month we take it further and focus on ‘daylight’. Building form, orientation, fenestration design and material selection has an impact on daylight ingress inside the space. Well distributed, glare-free spaces can contribute to occupant health and well-being as well as reduce lighting energy use. Refresh your knowledge with the NZEB quiz on this topic. You can also read more about the topic on our website.

Online training programs to develop skills for high-performance building design
Improved performance of both new and existing building stock is crucial for reaching our climate goals. With the right skills and continuous professional development, building industry professionals can influence the future built environment. Here is a list of online courses that can aid skill development in climate responsive design, building energy simulations, daylight optimization, green building ratings, among many others.

Online course | Getting to zero emissions with building energy codes:The biggest opportunity to respond to the climate emergency
As a leading source of carbon emissions, the building sector is critical to global ambitions to mitigate the climate emergency and reach net zero emissions. But the power of policy and its mechanisms to bring about transformative change and drive down emissions are not well understood. GBPN has developed an online self-paced course to support policy makers in understanding the potential of policy reform in the buildings sector, and how coupling building energy codes with complementary policies can lead towards a net zero future. The course includes engaging video animations and examples of best practice from around the world.

Garment factory for Brandix, Sri Lanka
The 200,513 sft apparel manufacturing facility for Brandix at Batticaloa in Sri Lanka is a high performing building that integrates passive design principles and innovative energy-efficient technologies. Proper orientation, good insulation, biodiversity, good daylight, water reduction, waste management strategies, building controls and several other strategies are considered in the design.
Light tubes and 100% LED lighting resulted in increased daylight and over 50% of lighting energy savings when compared to conventional lighting. Using magnetic bearing chillers with better part-load efficiency provides savings over 37% of energy, compared with conventional chillers. On the process side, the team developed an innovative air-saving device for uncurling knitted garments to reduce compressed air wastage by over 40%. The factory’s installation of a 1.65 MW rooftop solar plant gives an annual energy yield of 2,975 MWh, which exceeds the requirement of the premises. Read more.

This months’ question for you
Let us know what you think
To limit global warming to 1.5 degree C, emissions must be halved by 2030 and net-zero goals should be achieved by 2050. This requires immediate action! We want all your voices, hence we continue with last month’s question. If you have not responded yet, please do so now.
Inorder to scale-up NZEBs by 2050 (which is about 30 years from now), what initiative should be a priority in the next 2 years?
